We live in a post-pandemic world where office vacancies continue to rise while affordable housing inventory feels non-existent. Office-to-residential conversions serve as a potential solution to fill vacant office buildings while simultaneously creating more affordable housing options.

On August 17th, Dr. Malizia of UNC-Chapel Hill will join NAIOP Raleigh-Durham to present and discuss Yardi Matrix data on the office-to-residential trend. Does it make financial sense? What makes an office building an ideal candidate for conversion? Are conversions more environmentally friendly compared to new construction? Can these buildings be partially leased during the conversion?

Dr. Malizia has expertise in the related areas of regional economic development, real estate development, and urban redevelopment. His current research and practice is on the socio-economic characteristics and urban form of vibrant centers and their influence on local economic development, entrepreneurship, and real property performance. He is author or co-author of five books and over 160 articles, monographs, and other publications. During leaves, Dr. Malizia has worked in federal service and as a senior advisor to a major real estate investment company.
